Attorney for Mesothelioma and Asbestos Cases

Mesothelioma is a devastating diagnosis for anyone to hear. While some people develop mesothelioma without a clear cause, many people were neglectfully exposed to the cancer-causing asbestos from their employers, apartment owners, or companies that sold asbestos containing products. As your family navigates the expensive and overwhelming process of managing mesothelioma, know that it might be possible to recover compensation.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a very rare cancer that shows up in the lining of the lungs and abdomen. Unlike other types of lung cancer, it isn’t caused by smoking. In at least 80% of the cases of mesothelioma, the patient has been exposed to asbestos fibers that have been inhaled deeply into the lungs. At this time, there isn’t a cure for this disease and patients are typically given palliative care post-diagnosis.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a fluffy naturally occurring fiber that was used for decades as an insulation material in millions of homes and buildings.  It was intended to increase the strength of paper, cloth, cement, among other materials. It is now found in old buildings in floor tiles, ceiling insulation, and plaster, as well as automotive brakes, talcum powder, and hair dryers. Outside the U.S., asbestos is still used for various purposes.  Before asbestos was identified as a carcinogen and the only known cause of mesothelioma, many people were knowingly and unknowlingly exposed to asbestos at work and even at home. Today, it is estimated that over 125 million workers are exposed to asbestos every year.

Who Gets Mesothelioma

Since asbestos wasn’t banned for widespread use in the U.S. until 1989, many Americans were exposed to the harmful material for decades.  As those people with the highest exposure continue to age, their risk of developing mesothelioma continues to rise. Sometimes patients are misdiagnosed with lung cancer or another condition before the final diagnosis. The people most likely to be exposed to asbestos worked as:

Military personnel

  • Automotive mechanics

  • Asbestos miners

  • Boiler workers

  • Masons

  • HVAC professionals

  • Painters

  • Railroad workers

  • Machinists

  • Textile workers

  • Roofers

  • Construction workers

Since asbestos was so widely used, there are many other occupations and industries beyond this list that pose a high risk for workers. If you suspect that you were exposed to asbestos from your place of employment, it is possible that you might have a legal case.
